Kara Rosenberg had no recollection of meeting Sam Karp on a trip to Vietnam in 2016, but after matching on a dating app in 2021, both realized they had been living parallel lives.
It was in a hotel lobby bar in Hanoi, Vietnam, that Samuel Toff Karp and Kara Julia Rosenberg met in the summer of 2016. They were on separate trips with friends across Southeast Asia, and Ms. Rosenberg’s group invited Mr. Karp to come along with them to an underground club.
The club outing was just one of many adventures on their respective trips. In fact, Ms. Rosenberg said, “I have zero recollection of meeting him.”
In 2021, each was living in the Bay Area when the two matched on Bumble. “It was clear that she loved to travel, she loved food, and she just looked like a very fun person,” Mr. Karp said of Ms. Rosenberg’s profile.
Mr. Karp, 30, was raised in Hillsborough, Calif. He received a bachelor’s degree in business administration and management from Boston University and is a real estate investor, broker and consultant.

Ms. Rosenberg, 31, is a senior product marketing manager at Uber Eats. She grew up in Atherton, Calif., and attended Tulane University before transferring to the University of California, Berkeley, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in media studies.
Her precise college path was a pertinent detail on their first date, for which Mr. Karp suggested dinner at Sushi Ran in Sausalito. “I had this level of comfort with him right off the bat that I had not felt in quite a long time,” Ms. Rosenberg said.
