It didn’t take long for us to land in Cabo San Lucas once we started talking about how we envisioned our wedding. Riley and I separately loved Cabo even before we started dating and it was also the first place we traveled to together as a couple. It’s one of our favorite places overall and meets all of our criteria to be the perfect place to get married. We knew we wanted our wedding to feel like a fun party with our closest family and friends. Instead of the more traditional or formal route, we loved the idea of getting married on a Friday and having a laid-back party during the day on Saturday. We decided on doing a destination wedding so our guests could feel like they were on vacation which in turn quickly developed into Cabo. There are so many amazing venue options in Cabo but we fell in love with Chileno Bay. It’s an incredibly beautiful setting overlooking the water, the ambiance is relaxed, and everything from the food to the people who work there is amazing. We’ll forever be grateful we had the opportunity to get married there. We wanted to make sure that our beachy wedding incorporated elements specific to Mexico to give it more of a local feel. Our planners really helped us achieve that through the details by incorporating things like pops of color, patterns from ceramic tiles, red clay pottery, and natural wood.

Riley and I have known each other since we were 10 years old. Our moms first met way back in the day lifeguarding together in high school and they’ve been close friends ever since. Growing up we’d often go visit Riley’s family for a week over the summer because we lived in different places (I’m from New York, Riley’s from a lake in Iowa). There’s actual photo evidence of Riley and me at age 10 tubing together which we’ve tried to recreate many times. During one of those trips to the lake, Riley and I developed middle-school crushes on each other that didn’t go away even as we got older. Fast forward to the summer of 2016, which is when we officially started dating. I had just graduated from college and saw Riley again for the first time since high school – we’ve been together ever since and 7 years later, we got engaged!

Riley proposed in August 2023 on the very same lake that we first met which was the most special place to celebrate the next chapter of our lives. We went out on the boat for a sunset cruise, which is one of our favorite things to do. Riley opened up a bottle of our favorite wine and put on what eventually became our wedding song before getting down on one knee. I couldn’t have asked for a more meaningful moment to capture our relationship so perfectly. After I said yes, Riley’s family pulled up on a different boat where they’d been hiding from us and watching from a distance. They also had a second surprise with them, my family, who had secretly flown in from out of town to celebrate. It was truly one of the happiest days of my life!

Mostly pink bougainvillea. Our tables may have been my favorite part because they really tied all of the decor together. It can be hard to really get a sense for what you want because there are endless options to choose from and details that don’t even cross your mind like the color of the votives. We truly couldn’t have done it without our planners who made it so much more digestible to decide between 14 different forks and napkin rings. I had originally sent Jessica and Amy photos of tables for inspiration that had a lot more going on and were very hot pink and orange. We ended up swapping that out for more subtle and simple decor that felt a lot more traditional Mexican like our glassware, ceramic table numbers, vases for the flowers, and burnt orange painted ceramic plates. To top everything off our amazing paper goods designer Katherine Jezek made the most beautiful menus.

which is of Riley and me jumping into the lake after we got engaged. We absolutely love it
and still have it to this day.

I can’t imagine what the planning process would have looked like without Jessica and Amy at Amy Abbott Events. They went above and beyond in every way to be the most incredible support system both during planning and over the wedding weekend. We were so lucky to work with such experienced planners who were local to Cabo and trusted from the start that we were in good hands. Their knowledge of Cabo and existing vendor relationships were essential to the entire weekend being so perfect. If you’re planning a destination wedding I highly recommend working with someone who knows the area well – it’s an absolute game changer. We were also incredibly grateful for how reliable Jessica and Amy were – always there for us whether we needed advice on a decision or working behind the scenes to keep things on track. They made the entire planning process fun no matter how stressed we were at certain points. It was always an important reminder to enjoy every step along the way because it will be the most special weekend of your life. Cherish the time you get celebrating with your family and friends!
